The Spatial Engineer
Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 7 PM
Coolidge Museum at Forbes Library

Calvin Coolidge LibraryJoin the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum at the Forbes Library on the red carpet for a screening of The Spacial Engineer, a documentary by Ben Tobin about Massachusetts sculptor James Kitchen on December 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the library. All library patrons and friends are invited. The event is free. Both Kitchen and Tobin will attend to talk and answer questions.

This 20-minute film follows Kitchen as he wanders the back roads of the hilltowns exploring old fields and farms for the forgotten tools and equipment he uses as grist for his imagination as well as the material for his art. The film features his work with the city of Springfield to bring public art to the downtown landscape, including the installation of a 35-foot high metal bird sculpture. Tobin shows Kitchen at work sorting and welding.

At the same time Kitchen, in the guise of sculptor-philosopher, ponders the way he "plays" with the metal, calling himself a clumsy magician. There are interviews with Springfield Museum of Fine Art curator Heather Haskell about the popularity of Kitchen's work along with Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, Chesterfield artist/musician Mike Metzger and others.

Filmmaker Ben Tobin says: "The minute I stepped into James's workshop for the first time in March of 2012 I knew this was going to be an amazing film about a very unique and gifted artist. Aside from the obvious interest of documenting the process of metal sculpting I was also drawn to James's marvelous ability for storytelling and his philosophical study of art and the interconnectedness present in the world."

Kitchen is an enormous fan of libraries. The expression of his sculpture is a continuum along which wondering, reading, thinking, and creating have place. Libraries are a piece of that continuum. Tobin's movie captures Kitchen and his enthusiasm for mind, life, art, and work.
